History of the Cardinal's Award

In 1989, Archbishop Mahony discussed the need to recognize people in the Archdiocese who had made a difference. Later that year an advisory committee was formed to plan for the first event. A statue of Our Lady was designed to be presented to each person honored. Five people were recommended as honorees, and charities were selected to be recipients of the proceeds. The first event was held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel on February 1, 1990.

Two years later, after Archbishop Mahony had been elevated to the rank of a Cardinal , a different design was selected for the award, incorporating the medallion struck honoring the Cardinal. It was in 1996 that Cardinal Mahony made the decision that the annual proceeds would be used to benefit poorer parishes and schools. In 1998, the event was moved to the Beverly Hilton Hotel to accomodate increased attendance.

One of the most frequent remarks made by those attending the event has been that they are so proud to be a part of such an elegant and large Catholic gathering which comes together annually to recognize friends and support charity. There is another wonderful and intangible benefit: this is the starting point for many to become more actively involved in the work of the Archdiocese.
