Catholic School Students Raise Record $350,000 For Haitian Relief During ‘Hats For Haiti’ Event
Catholic school students through the Holy Childhood Association in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles helped raise a record $350,000 to assist Haitian children and others in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Students raised the money by paying $1 or more to wear hats to school during a “Hats for Haiti” week, Jan. 19-22.
“Our children saw the news stories and responded with love and concern for their suffering brothers and sisters in Haiti,” said Cardinal Roger Mahony. “The funds raised will help the children of Haiti to recover from this disaster and to rebuild their lives along with their families.”
The funds were collected by the Holy Childhood Association in the Archdiocese, and were matched by a $100,000 donation from an anonymous donor, bringing the grand total to $350,000, said Monsignor Terrance Fleming, director of HCA in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
“The money will be sent right away to the local church in Haiti,” Monsignor Fleming said. “We teach our young people that they are connected to others around the world by bonds of humanity and faith. It’s clear to me that this is what motivated such an outpouring of generosity from our children.”
Monsignor Fleming also noted that the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Society, Monsignor John Kozar of New York, stated that the $350,000 collected in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles represents the largest amount ever collected by the Holy Childhood Association in the United States.
